There are many reasons why a photo or video may be missing location or date taken data.
For Videos
There isn't a standard way cameras have agreed to write location or date taken date into a video file. In the absence of a standard, we cannot guarantee that we can get this data and display it.
For Photos
First check if the device you are taking photos and videos with is writing the location and date taken data into the photo file.
- If you own a Mac, you can check if your photos have this data by going to Apple Photos and right clicking on a photo. This will bring up a little menu next to the photo. Select Get Info to reveal the taken date and location data.
- If you have a Windows PC, you can right click on a photo in Windows Explorer. This will open a small menu. Select Properties to view the photos location and date taken data.
If your photo has this info, then its possible that data is being stripped out by the client you are using before being sent to PhotoSpring.
The table below summarizes which clients strip this data before sending it to PhotoSpring. As you can see, when photos are sent from an iPhone using Web, Email or App sharing - Apple strips out location and date taken data to preserve the users privacy. If this data is important to you, then when using the iPhone, the best way to send photos is through the PhotoSpring app for iPhone.
